Time to Revamp your Resume

Considering the increase of technology in this new generation, all of you that are more mature than the electronics sitting on my desk should seriously think about revamping your resume. I know it sounds like a tedious task, but it just may be the edge you need in owning that job offer from the door rather than battling all of us recent graduates in the group interview. Yes, I said it and no disrespect, but let's be honest 9 out of 10 employers are virtual and now they check your twitter, facebook and other social network presence before they check your qualifications.

The upside is you won't have any potential harmful comments, status updates or pics to count against, but on the other hand, you won't have anything going for you either other than your years of experience and out-of-date training. Unless you are working for the 1 in 10 businesses that are still paper only, this will not do you much good.

Now, I bet you are wondering why? Well, since we can't see your face or personality on the paper, it makes it easier to get a feel of who we think you may be. Hey, we are not perfect and we do not expect you to be, but it is nice to know what you are working with before you make a phone call or send out written correspondence. After all that is what technology has been created and updated for. It is the recruiter's duty to abuse any and all utensils that allow us to reduce risk and turnover.

Check out these sites for tips on how to make it happen:

Pay vs. Position: Will You Take the High Road?

Is the position worth the pay or is the pay worth the position? We all battle with this question at some point in our career. We are faced a challenge that requires us toe valuate whether the position will be worth the pay or if the pay will be worth the position. At the present time I am reading Creating Your Personal Life Plan by Michael Hyatt (http://michaelhyatt.com/life-plan) and I am focusing on the bigger scheme rather than the immediate results. The first thing this book outlines is creating a life plan. Begin from the end and work you way backwards.

There is an old saying that if you do not know where you come from, how can you know where you are going. Well, Hyatt introduces a new perspective; if you do not know what you want out of life, how can you accomplish your goals and dreams. In order to make a step in the right direction, you have to know yourself in and out. Apart of knowing yourself is knowing your strengths, weaknesses, what you want and being confident enough to go for it even if you have to go the road alone.

Every person looks to advance in their career field, but everyone is not fit for a position of power nor is every high position fit for the oldest employee. Tenure plays a tremendous role in acquiring a position of power within most companies, but the most important thing is confidence and initiative. You can not sit around and wait for a promotion you must be proactive. You also can not expect that every promotion is going to come with a raise. It really depends on the budget and an analysis of the responsibilities. This is where your personal decision is weighed. Would you be willing to stay in a tenured position  at the same rate of pay or is salary more important?

Duties may be substituted which results in no raise; however, the importance of the position may outweigh the salary allowed thus resulting in your rewards being greater than your sacrifice. The average American will go for the raise just for some variety in experience, but the cost is too great if your personal capacity does not function in the position. In order to make a sound decision when it comes to this obstacle you have to weigh the pros and cons. If the pros outweigh the cons, then you have no need to worry. If your cons outweigh your pros, then you got some worrying to do and some damage control to initiate.

I hope that this proved to be helpful to someone out there. Will post again soon. Good Luck to all and thank you for reading.

Getting Back to Work

100K Two Year Degree

5 Industries That Are Bouncing Back

Online Degrees That Are Worth It

Career-minded Degrees

As a recruiter and a college-student, I knew what I was looking for on paper. My preferences via phone and face-to face changed. On paper I was looking for experience and a hint of character based on extra-curricular activities or clout of references, but in person or via phone I was looking for respect. Self-respect and respect for others was my priority. A good employee respects his/herself first and thus those around him are respected as well.

The biggest cause of turnover in a company stems from lack of respect. You must respect yourself and those around you, but your advancement within a company is determined by your respect for that company and your position in it. Think of the company as an individual. You yourself want to succeed at whatever it is you do in life. The company is a reflection of an individual. They want to succeed and in order to do that they rely on successful employees. The successful employee shows up to work on time, calls if they are running late, and is eager to take overtime. We all know that every employee is not capable of this, but there are many that can take the initiative.

Initiative is another factor to recruiters. We all look for someone who will return the phone call or respond to the e-mail even if it is just to say that you are no longer interested. That means the recruiter has not wasted additional effort and time to recruit an unavailable product. Yes, you are the product and as a product you must sell yourself. Highlight your strengths and know your weaknesses. Weaknesses only hurt you if you can not identify them and work on improving them.

So to put it blatantly, you are the product that the company needs to be successful. There are tons of products on the market find what makes you unique and milk it.

These are a few articles I thought would be helpful to those who are researching their options as the job market picks up. As you all have heard there is to be an expected flux of jobs this year in conjunction with the decrease of unemployment claims and the rise of the market.
